Sangamon County stores Bicentennial Video Time Capsule

The Sangamon County board passed a resolution this week that concludes its bicentennial year and authorizes the placement of video time capsules containing local residents’ personal stories at both the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library (ALPL) and the county building. The resolution instructs future county leaders to open the time capsule in 50 years for the county’s 250th birthday.

“Our video time capsule campaign that celebrated our 200th birthday was a huge success! We collected narratives from residents throughout the county from all ages, backgrounds and professions,” said Annette Fulgenzi, Sangamon County Board Member “We believe they each tell a fantastic story about our county’s past, present and hopes for the future. In 50 years, Sangamon County residents will be able to glimpse into the past and hear about many wonderful things that were happening in 2021, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Each time capsule contains 234 videos and three written narratives. The ALPL will have access to the time capsule materials to use them for future research.

“I am very proud to have been a part of the Sangamon County Bicentennial Committee and the time capsule project,” said Ben Warwick, a student at Auburn High School. “I look forward to being there when we open the time capsule in 50 years.”

Videos submitted for the bicentennial may still be viewed on Sangamon County’s website.
