County Launches Transportation Hub Website

County Launches Transportation Hub Website

Sangamon County launches new website to celebrate the progress on the Transportation Hub and renovations to the County Building

Sangamon County launched a new website to keep the public up to speed with the exciting projects in downtown Springfield with the planned Springfield-Sangamon County Transportation Hub (The Hub) and renovation of the Sangamon County building to improve access to county services.

“Our county board has been a great partner with the state and federal government to improve access to public transportation in downtown Springfield. It is so exciting to see the construction beginning on the Hub and renovations starting at our 30-year-old county facility, all within the constraints of our budget, without tax increases,” said Andy VanMeter, Sangamon County Board Chairman. “We are excited to see the plans come to life and want to keep our constituents informed with this new website.”

The website includes design renderings, videos, a live cam of the construction site and more information related to The Hub and county renovations.

The website will continue to be updated as new information becomes available as the project continues to move through the design, programming development and construction.

Timeline for Transportation Hub and County Renovations

  • Construction has begun on the new transfer center facilities for Sangamon Mass Transit District and will be completed in 2023.
  • The renovations on the county building have also started.
  • The part of the Hub that will include the new Amtrak station, county square, café space and sky bridge that connects to the SMTD bus transfer station is still in the design phase.

SMTD bus riders are already using the downtown site at Eleventh and East Washington Streets for downtown transfers.  Amtrak passengers will continue to board and alight the trains at the current station on Third Street until the rail relocation project and hub construction are complete scheduled for 2025.
