The Veterans Assistance Commission serves to coordinate
veterans' assistance programs with various agencies for Sangamon
County veterans. Each of the 19 veteran organizations in the county
elects a delegate and an alternate to the Commission, which elects
the Superintendent of the Veterans Assistance Commission.
The Veterans Assistance Commission staff provides assistance
to veterans and their widows in obtaining aid and benefits for
emergency living, hospital care, education, and death expenses.
These services and some of the benefits are funded by a special
tax levy. Specific services include:
- Locating discharge papers for verification of benefits
- Providing emergency assistance: groceries, rent , and utilities to
those who qualify
- Arranging appointments at veterans' hospitals and clinics
- Arranging transportation to and from hospitals and clinics
- Writing letters of claim for veterans
- Filing for pension benefits
- Filing for death and burial benefits or reimbursements
(grave markers provided if requested)
- Helping to secure National Life Insurance benefits
- Preparing application for a veteran to live in the veterans' home in Quincy
